The mission of the Rod Dedeaux Research & Baseball Institute (RDRBI) is education of athletes as well as their coaches and parents.

  • The RDRBI Pitcher's program consists of the following areas of emphasis:
  • Biomechanical Protocols and drills that enable pitchers to perform with more durability and consistency and further protect pitchers from injury and down-time
  • Functional Fitness training system developed through years of research designed specifically for the needs of throwing and striking sports
  • Nutritional Education that will facilitate peak performance and speedy recovery
  • Mental and emotional preparation that will help pitchers develop more effectively

Science-Based Training and Biomechanics

The RDRBI has made it a priority to bring education and training to athletes through science-based research.  The cornerstone of our research is the RDRBI Motion Analysis. With 8 high speed cameras, we are able to record the movements of a pitching motion at 1200 frames per second-30 times faster than the human eye. Using our proprietary analysis software, we are able to examine joint angles, balance and posture of pitchers throughout the motion.

Our protocols were developed through this objective data to teach efficient pitching mechanics and train the body for the stresses of pitching.

 Teaching Pitching Mechanics

The RDRBI's pitching model consists of seven key phases as determined by motion analysis of top major league pitchers. Instructors of the RDRBI teach pitching mechanics through a series of drills and throwing programs to reinforce and enhance durability and consistency.

How RDRBI Motion Analysis Works

First, the athlete is recorded by 8 high-speed cameras which can capture data 30 times faster than the human eye.

The data is translated into a skeletal image which can be rotated in three dimensions and examined for joint angles, balance, posture, distance of release point from the rubber, and other relevant measurements.

Using this data, we analyze the athlete's current pitching motion in three pitches - fastball, breaking ball, and off-speed pitch. These motions are reviewed throughout the seven phases of the RDRBI's pitching model as well as comparison to our database of past and present major league pitchers.

We are then able to identify the athlete's strengths, weaknesses and imbalances and put together a customized training program to address these issues.

Finally, after the athlete has done the training program for a sufficient period of time, we perform a follow-up analysis in front of the camera to evaluate progress and assess what areas, if any, need more work.
